Daughter-in-laws create hell for mother-in-laws

Posted by admin On October - 19 - 2010

Daughter-in-laws create hell for mother-in-lawsIt is a common notion that mother-in-laws make the life of her son’s wife a living hell but a research has suggested that the daughter-in-law is actually primed for revenge.

It was shown by the research that women who are cared for by their son’s wife in later life fare less well than those looked after by their own daughter.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

According to Japanese researchers, the friction in the mother and daughter-in-law relationships is at the heart of their results, with years of arguments finally taking their toll.

During the four-year study, the scientists tracked almost 200 elderly Japanese men and women.

Their analysis revealed that living with a son and his wife to be highly detrimental to a woman’s health.

A woman cared for by her daughter-in-law was twice as likely to have died as one who lived with her daughter.

“These findings are provocative in that they suggest a survival disadvantage for women who are cared for by their daughters-in-law, that is a daughter-in-law ‘penalty,’” the Daily Mail quoted the University of Tsukuba researchers as saying.

At its heart could be the ’strained relationship’ between the two women, who traditionally are fighting for the affections of the same man.

The study was published in the journal BMC Geriatrics.

Inspiring Quotes for Healthy Lifestyle

If you want to make it big in the world of health or fitness, these quotes on healthy lifestyle will be more than just useful for you.

I venture to maintain that there are multitudes to whom the necessity of discharging the duties of a butcher would be so inexpressibly painful and revolting, that if they could obtain a flesh diet on no other condition, they would relinquish it forever. – W.E.H. Lecky

One farmer says to me, “You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with;” and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle. – Henry David Thoreau

The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined.  If beef is your idea of “real food for real people” you’d better live real close to a real good hospital. – Neal Barnard

Myths about exercises

Posted by admin On September - 13 - 2010

Myths about exercisesIf you have recently joined the gym after being inspired by the numerous models and actors flaunting their hot bodies, it is time for you to know about some misconceptions about bodybuilding and workouts so that you do not fall prey to failure or health problems.

It is important for you to note that good sleep of 8-9 hours and post workout nutrition are highly essential and beneficial for you in order to increase protein synthesis, suppress cortisol, enhance recovery, and replenish glycogen.

From Timesofindia.indiatimes.com:

Exercising on empty stomach

According to fitness expert Nawaz Modi Singhania, one of the most common mistakes people make when they start to workout is by starting to exercise on an empty stomach. “Working out on an empty stomach could lead to fatigue, even before your body actually starts metabolising the fat,” she says. “But don’t exercise on a full stomach either.” The healthy thing to do is to not eat a heavy meal for at least an hour before you begin your workout. Instead have a light health snack. “A fruit or health biscuits are a good option,” she says.

Join a gym to get fit

This is another common misconception, point out health experts. Any form of activity that gives your body an overall workout including cycling, dancing, jogging or even swimming is just as good a way to get fit as joining a gym. As long as you get exercise in some form, being fit need not be synonymous with gymming.

Women bulk up like men if they do weights

“Regular workouts only make the muscles firm and taut. It’s a myth that women bulk up like men do,” clarifies clinical fitness specialist Namita Jain. “Unless a woman works towards achieving that look, it’s highly unlikely, that she will bulk up by default,” adds Namita.

Expecting miracles

The perfectly-sculpted bodies that you see on TV are not made over a day. It needs patience, dietary discipline and a lot of hardwork. Fitness instructors who promise you otherwise in just a few weeks are exactly the ones you’d want to avoid.

We hope that these easy-to-follow and effective tips help you get in good shape.

Exercise at Later Age is Equally Beneficial

Posted by admin On September - 6 - 2010

Exercise at Later Age is Equally BeneficialExercise is a way to good health. Exercising is advised at every age and cannot be avoided too. If you start exercising in your 40s or 50s or even 60s, it is never too late. People at this age can take up proper bone agility exercises, cardio exercises and aerobic fitness regimen to take care of arthritis and cancer to an extent. One can’t lay back and become a couch potato because you were an athlete in your 20s. On the other side, it is slightly difficult for those who have never been into sports activities.

From timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Exercising in your 40’s, 50’s and 60’s is like saving for your retirement, experts say. Starting early is money in the bank, but even late bloomers can reap astonishing benefits.

“Aerobic fitness, bone health, agility, you may be able to catch up. It’s remarkable to see the things people can actually do.” Smith, a physician at Philadelphia Children’s Hospital, said studies have shown that even octogenarians can double their strength with weight training. “There’s good evidence that among people who have arthritis, the stronger have less pain, and that getting fit decreases the chance of having cancer,” she said.

They are not aware of their body moments and might end up with fractured limbs or muscle aches. Therefore it is always advised to go for training sessions and repeat for at least 3-4 weeks for any difference in strength. Including daily activities in your routine such as taking a walk along with your dog and being active in any other way will serve the purpose.

Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them. – Samuel Butler, Note-Books, 1912

Sickness is poor-spirited, and cannot serve anyone; it must husband its resources to live.  But health or fullness answers its own ends, and has to spare, runs over, and inundates the neighborhoods and creeks of other men’s necessities. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d druther not. – Mark Twain

There is a necessity for a regulating discipline of exercise that, whilst evoking the human energies, will not suffer them to be wasted. – Thomas de Quincey

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it. – Plato

The autonomic nervous system is divided into the sympathetic system, which is often identified with the fight-or-flight response, and the parasympathetic, which is identified with what’s been called the relaxation response. When you do yoga – the deep breathing, the stretching, the movements that release muscle tension, the relaxed focus on being present in your body – you initiate a process that turns the fight-or-flight system off and the relaxation response on. That has a dramatic effect on the body. The heartbeat slows, respiration decreases, blood pressure decreases. The body seizes this chance to turn on the healing mechanisms. – Richard Faulds

Heart risk higher for short people

Posted by admin On July - 23 - 2010

Heart risk higher for short peopleStatistics show that short people find it difficult to get elected to public office, find a mate, and make less money. A new study has some more bad news for short people.

According to an analysis published in the European Heart Journal, shortest short people (men under 5 feet 5 inches and women fewer than 5 feet) are roughly 50 percent more likely to have a heart attack or die from heart complications when compared to the tallest people.

From Edition.cnn.com:

A new study suggests that it gets worse: The shortest short people — men under 5 feet 5 inches and women under 5 feet — are roughly 50 percent more likely than the tallest people to have a heart attack or die from heart disease, according to an analysis published in the European Heart Journal.

Why? Probably due to a combination of underlying factors that contribute to both short stature and poor heart health, such as age, the researchers say.

“Older people are shorter,” the lead author of the study, Tuula Paajanen, MD, a researcher at the University of Tampere, in Finland, points out in an e-mail. “Also, you have to remember that height is at least a combination of genetics, socioeconomic status, and nutritional factors. So when using height we are also thinking about some confounding factors.”

Paajanen and her colleagues analyzed data from 52 high-quality studies that included more than 3 million people. Hundreds of studies dating back to 1951 have explored the link between short height and heart disease, but this is the first systematic review and analysis of all the good studies on the subject.

Michael Lauer, MD, the director of the division of cardiovascular sciences at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, however said that the findings are hardly any proof that people with short height are more prone to heart diseases.

UN Chief urges world nations to make investments in women's healthBan Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, has made calls to global governments for initiating efforts to improve women’s health or risk missing an UN-set deadline for reducing the number of maternal deaths.

Ban, speaking at Women Deliver, the largest international women’s health conference in a decade, said health issues pertaining to women and children have been the slowest of the UN Millennium Development Goals to make progress.

From News.yahoo.com:

“Women are dying because their lives are not important enough to policymakers around the world,” said Guttmacher Institute president and CEO Sharon Camp.

She noted that while less than 12 billion dollars were spent last year to promote maternal health — a sum she said should be at least doubled — “Wall Street bosses paid themselves twice that in bonuses last year.”

At the conference, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pledged 1.5 billion dollars in support of family planning and programs that support nutrition and fight the deaths of newborns and of women in childbirth.

The philanthropic group hoped to set an example for world governments to follow.

“It’s not that the world doesn’t know how to save the 350,000 mothers and three million newborns who die every year,” Melinda Gates said as she announced the grant.

“It’s that we haven’t tried hard enough.”

An initial grant of 94 million dollars has already been made for projects in India, and 60 million dollars have gone to Ethiopia, with the rest due to be disbursed over the next five years.

Hepatitis victims not contactable by Health Authorities

Posted by admin On June - 16 - 2010

Hepatitis victims not contactable by Health AuthoritiesHalf of the 55 New Zealand women at risk of hepatitis C following treatment at a Melbourne abortion clinic have been identified and health authorities are urging others to come forward.

It is expected that about 3500 women, including the 55 New Zealanders, contracted the disease from Peters.

From Tvnz.co.nz:

Healthline has taken 66 calls from New Zealand women who believe they could have contracted the disease, and transferred 54 calls to the Australian hepatitis C helpline, Ministry of Health deputy director of public health Fran McGrath says.

The calls came after media coverage and advertisements urged the 55 New Zealanders at risk of contracting the disease from Croydon Day Surgery, in Melbourne’s northeast, where anaesthetist James Peters worked between 2006 and late last year, to come forward.

The Victorian Department of Health had notified the ministry 26 of the 55 New Zealand women had been contacted and referred for testing.

McGrath says anyone treated at the clinic between January 2006 and December 2009 should ring Healthline on 0800 611 116 and get tested and treated if needed.

The Victorian police and the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria have already initiated investigations against Peters over his patients’ infections.

Best Food Products for Head of the Family

Posted by admin On June - 12 - 2010

Best Food Products for Head of the FamilyTOPS Club, Inc. (Take off Pounds Sensibly), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization, recently suggested a variety of tips and ideas in order to provide much-needed guidance on improving a man’s health.

These tips are just on time for National Men’s Health Week from June 14-20, and Father’s Day on June 20.

From Strausnews.com:

Foods just right for men

We hear a lot these days about how important it is for women to eat certain foods containing specific nutrients. What about men? Are there foods men should eat for better overall health? The answer is an unequivocal, “Yes.” In fact, there are several foods and nutrients men should consume most days of the week for optimum health, as outlined by Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, authors of the “YOU” series of books.

1. Fiber – Men need to eat at least 25 grams of fiber each day. While that can be daunting, fiber is found in a number of sources, like grapefruit, soybeans, and whole grains. If you’re looking for whole grain products, make sure the ingredients read: “100 percent whole grain” or “100 percent whole wheat.”

2. Folate – Men can significantly reduce their risks for some kinds of cancer by eating food rich in folate. Take a supplement or add dark, leafy greens and orange juice to your diet. Men are advised to look for the words “folate” or “folic” on food labels and to get at least 800 mg each day.

3. Tomato sauce – It takes 165 raw tomatoes to equal ten tablespoons of tomato sauce. This juicy red fruit contains lycopene, which can help fight cancer. Instead of eating all those tomatoes, enjoy ten tablespoons of tomato sauce per week and decrease the chances of arterial aging, heart disease, stroke, memory loss, and other conditions.

4. A handful of nuts – Men should eat walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts to get the powerful omega-3s, healthy fats with multiple benefits. It’s good practice to snack on some before eating foods like pasta or corn on the cob. The fat in the nuts helps the stomach slow down and the body to more effectively process the sugar from the carbohydrates in those meals.

5. Fish – Men also should consider eating a serving of fish three times a week. Tilapia, salmon, flounder, cod, and mahi-mahi are all good choices. They’re high in protein and low in fat and carry a low amount of mercury, a chemical that can increase the risk of heart disease and impaired memory.
