Diabetes patients can find relief with Yoga

Diabetes patients can find relief with Yoga

A small study has suggested that a small amount of weight could be taken off and blood sugar control can be steadied in people with type 2 diabetes by engaging in gentle yoga classes.

“In our study the effect of yoga on BMI (body mass index) and blood sugar control was marginal,” Shreelaxmi V. Hegde of the Srinivas Institute of Medical Science and Research Center in Mangalore, India and the lead researcher on the work, told Reuters Health in an email.

From Reuters.com:

In addition to that, the study found, signs of so-called oxidative stress declined in the yoga group.

Oxidative stress refers to a situation where levels of reactive oxygen species or “free radicals” — damaging byproducts of energy use in cells — rise beyond the body’s capacity to neutralize them. Long-term oxidative stress is believed to contribute to a host of chronic diseases.

The findings do not suggest that yoga should replace other forms of exercise for people with type 2 diabetes.

The findings were reported in the journal Diabetes Care.

Plaxico Burress walked into the New York Giants‘ training facility a few years ago that reminded him of his days when the Jets beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2008.

“There’s no anger toward anybody over there,” said the Jets wide receiver, now on the other side of the New York-New Jersey-area rivalry. “Everything that happened to me, I brought it upon myself.”

From NYTimes.com:

Burress Says No 'Extra Juice' for GiantsThe fines by the team. The disagreements with coach Tom Coughlin. His release in April 2009. The 20-month prison sentence he served for accidentally shooting himself in a Manhattan nightclub.

Some fans and media believed the Giants had a good chance of going back to the Super Bowl before that incident. They finished 12-4, but lost to Philadelphia in the divisional round of the playoffs.

“We had a really good team, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “We definitely had some special players. We had a good thing going. It’s unfortunate that everything happened the way that it did.

“Everything went well. It was a great meeting. Business is business, and now I’m over here,” Burress said.

Words lost for Wimbledon after Isner-Mahut epic

Posted by admin On August - 2 - 2010

Words lost for Wimbledon after Isner-Mahut epicJohn Isner and Nicolas Mahut rewrote every record in the books of lawn tennis after fighting a 10-hour epic at Wimbledon that left even tennis greats agog with admiration.

The match started on Tuesday, lasted all day Wednesday, and will hopefully come to an end on Thursday and thereafter it will be in memories of all sports admirers who were more than just proud to witness the freak and surreal stalemate.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

In the most mind-boggling encounter ever witnessed on a tennis court, or maybe even in the sporting world, Isner and Mahut sent statisticians scrambling and caused the scoreboard to malfunction as they fought toe-to-toe for 10 hours in the longest ever tennis match.

Incredibly as the sun set over Court 18, they staggered out of the All England Club at 2110 local time with their first-round match still undecided and the fifth set locked at 59-all.

The battle started on Tuesday, lasted all day Wednesday, will hopefully conclude on Thursday and will live long in the memory of those lucky enough to witness the freak, surreal stalemate.

“Seriously… doesn’t anyone have to pee? Umpires included?” Andy Roddick Tweeted as he watched the final set drag on for seven hours and six minutes.

The fifth set alone eclipsed the record for the longest ever completed match at six hours and 33 minutes.

It was meant to be a day when Federer, who had a narrow escape in the first round, was supposed to prove that he is still the undisputed king of Wimbledon, but again he failed to convince.

Fans wanted to see more of the tennis heroes but the supervisor stepped on court and signaled with his hands to call it the day.
