Getting Healthy and Motivated with Inspiring QuotationsWhen it comes to staying close to success, it is easy for most of us to get that “winning” momentum with inspiring quotations. This is the reason why we have compiled a list of motivational quotes so that you can stay high on success and inspiration.

Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them. – Samuel Butler, Note-Books, 1912

One farmer says to me, “You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with;” and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle. – Henry David Thoreau

Sickness is poor-spirited, and cannot serve anyone; it must husband its resources to live.  But health or fullness answers its own ends, and has to spare, runs over, and inundates the neighborhoods and creeks of other men’s necessities. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d druther not. – Mark Twain

There is a necessity for a regulating discipline of exercise that, whilst evoking the human energies, will not suffer them to be wasted. – Thomas de Quincey

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it. – Plato

The autonomic nervous system is divided into the sympathetic system, which is often identified with the fight-or-flight response, and the parasympathetic, which is identified with what’s been called the relaxation response. When you do yoga – the deep breathing, the stretching, the movements that release muscle tension, the relaxed focus on being present in your body – you initiate a process that turns the fight-or-flight system off and the relaxation response on. That has a dramatic effect on the body. The heartbeat slows, respiration decreases, blood pressure decreases. The body seizes this chance to turn on the healing mechanisms. – Richard Faulds

Health Tips for World Cup Travelers

Posted by admin On June - 3 - 2010

Health Tips for World Cup TravelersAccording to a new study in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, football lovers traveling to South Africa for the World Cup should be worrying about mundane problems like diarrhea, measles, and tick bites than exotic tropical disease such as yellow fever and malaria.

This study was based on the illnesses reported by more than 15,000 tourists who had visited Africa between 1997 and 2009 and later seen at 50 travel medicine clinics in 23 countries that belong to the GeoSentinel network.

From Goal.blogs.nytimes.com:

The most common illnesses reported were fevers, rashes and acute diarrhea. Tap water in South African cities is safe but, as is true even for visitors to the United States, tourists often get diarrhea from unfamiliar food and drink. The study suggested carrying over-the-counter remedies. It also suggested checking the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control. Taking antibiotics as a precaution is not recommended.

The most common insect-borne disease detected was African tick-bite fever, which can be treated with antibiotics. Tourists in grassy rural areas should avoid tick bites: wear long pants tucked into socks, use insect repellent with DEET and check your body for ticks.

(I lived in South Africa from 1995 to 1999, and never had malaria, but did get tick-bite fever after sitting in tall grass on a historic battlefield. It was the worst headache and fever of my life, but my doctor laughed it off as routine. “It’s not nearly as scary as that thing you have in America,” he said. “What is it called? Lyme disease?”)

Flu shots were suggested by the authors since the football season will also be South Africa’s flu season.

Michael Ballack’s agent can sue Boateng

Posted by admin On May - 24 - 2010

michael ballack's agent can sue boatengMichael Becker, agent for Michael Ballack, is contemplating to take legal actions against Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng. Ballack was ruled out of the FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa after a reckless challenge by Boateng in the FA Cup final.

Becker in an interview with Bild said that the act of Boateng was clearly an intention to hurt Ballack and an apology by Boateng is not enough.

From ESPNStar.com:

Michael Becker, who is in charge of Ballack, is clearly not satisfied with Boateng’s apology to German captain and has claimed that the his client is set to suffer a €1 million loss of revenue from sponsors and bonuses after the influential midfielder is ruled out of the World Cup, thanks Boateng’s reckless challenge in the FA Cup final.

Becker is also adamant that Ghanaian had no intention to play the ball during his challenge on Ballack.

“Every spectator has seen what Boateng did. That was clearly a foul with the intention to hurt Ballack. We are considering taking legal action,” said Becker in an interview with Bild.

“We are thinking about taking the case to civil court, but criminal punishment is also an option. You can’t just intentionally break the rules to hurt your opponent. It’s not like a football field is a place where the law doesn’t count, unlike what Boateng thinks.”

It is worth noting here that Boateng has been named as Germany’s enemy number 1 ever since his reckless challenge forced Ballack, the Captain of Germany, to get ruled out of the World Cup.

Unlike any other business in the United States, sports must preserve an illusion of perfect innocence. The mounting of this illusion defines the purpose and accounts for the immense wealth of American sports. It is the ceremony of innocence that the fans pay to see — not the game or the match or the bout, but the ritual portrayal of a world in which time stops and all hope remains plausible, in which everybody present can recover the blameless expectations of a child, where the forces of light always triumph over the powers of darkness. – Lewis H. Lapham

In sport, mental imagery is used primarily to help you get the best out of yourself in training and competition. The developing athletes who make the fastest progress and those who ultimately become their best make extensive use of mental imagery. They use it daily as a means of directing what will happen in training, and as a way of pre-experiencing their best competition performances. – Terry Orlick

There is no greater honor than the one received by athletes the moment they see the raised flag of their country at the highest level, and when they hear their national anthem inundating every corner of the stadium and reaching the ends of the earth. – Voula Patoulidou

Sport inevitably creates deadness of feeling. No one could take pleasure in it who was sensitive to suffering; and therefore its pursuit by women is much more to be regretted than its pursuit by men, because women pursue much more violently and recklessly what they pursue at all. – Ouida

I don’t think I can be expected to take seriously any game which takes less than three days to reach its conclusion. – Tom Stoppard

Adversity cause some men to break; others to break records. – William Arthur Ward

Sports do not build character. They reveal it. – John Wooden

I run because it’s my passion, and not just a sport. Every time I walk out the door, I know why I’m going where I’m going and I’m already focused on that special place where I find my peace and solitude. Running, to me, is more than just a physical exercise… it’s a consistent reward for victory!  – Sasha Azevedo

There are people who think that wrestling is an ignoble sport. Wrestling is not sport, it is a spectacle, and it is no more ignoble to attend a wrestled performance of suffering than a performance of the sorrows of Arnolphe or Andromaque. – Roland Barthes

So you wish to conquer in the Olympic games, my friend? And I too, by the Gods, and a fine thing it would be! But first mark the conditions and the consequences, and then set to work. You will have to put yourself under discipline; to eat by rule, to avoid cakes and sweetmeats; to take exercise at the appointed hour whether you like it or no, in cold and heat; to abstain from cold drinks and from wine at your will; in a word, to give yourself over to the trainer as to a physician. Then in the conflict itself you are likely enough to dislocate your wrist or twist your ankle, to swallow a great deal of dust, or to be severely thrashed, and, after all these things, to be defeated. – Epictetus
