Most supplements contain contaminants

Posted by admin On May - 31 - 2010

Most supplements contain contaminantsInvestigators have found that nearly all of the herbal dietary supplements tested in a Congressional investigation included amounts of lead and other contaminants.

This report, which was prepared by the Government Accountability Office, was provided to The New York Times and made available to the public at a Senate hearing on Wednesday.

From NYTimes.com:

Travis T. Tygart, chief executive of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, wrote a letter to the committee saying that some athletes have been rendered ineligible for international competitions because they took supplements that contained steroids not listed on the products’ labels. There are thousands of supplements available for sale that contain steroids or other harmful ingredients, he wrote.

“The F.D.A. is operating in a regulatory environment that is simply too burdensome to allow for effective post-market regulation of these products,” Mr. Tygart wrote.

Half of the nation’s adult population takes vitamin supplements regularly, and about a quarter take herbal supplements at least occasionally. Annual sales are about $25 billion a year, and the growing popularity has led to an increasing number of imported supplements spiked with illegal drugs.

In 1994, Congress passed legislation that allowed supplement makers to sell products without first getting approval from the F.D.A. for their ingredients or for basic health claims. But scientific organizations have warned repeatedly since then that the F.D.A. should do more to ensure that the supplements are safe and that their health claims are substantiated.

Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, principal deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said that FDA had increased enforcement actions against supplements spiked with prescription drugs.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

New Zealand’s Tim Brown faces a race against time to be fit for the World Cup after the midfielder underwent surgery on a fractured shoulder he suffered in a World Cup warm-up, New Zealand Football said on Thursday.

The All Whites vice-captain had three screws inserted into the bone he damaged in Monday’s match against Australia in Melbourne during the operation in Auckland on Thursday.

“Initial indications are positive and that the surgery went well, but it is too early yet to say what the recovery time frame for the injury is,” a statement on the New Zealand Football website (www.nzfootball.co.nz) said.

Team Wellington midfielder Cole Peverley, 21, has been brought into the 23-man squad as a “standby” for Brown.

New Zealand open their World Cup campaign against Slovakia on June 15 in Rustenburg before coming one-on-one against champions Italy and Paraguay in other Group F matches.

Michael Ballack’s agent can sue Boateng

Posted by admin On May - 24 - 2010

michael ballack's agent can sue boatengMichael Becker, agent for Michael Ballack, is contemplating to take legal actions against Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng. Ballack was ruled out of the FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa after a reckless challenge by Boateng in the FA Cup final.

Becker in an interview with Bild said that the act of Boateng was clearly an intention to hurt Ballack and an apology by Boateng is not enough.

From ESPNStar.com:

Michael Becker, who is in charge of Ballack, is clearly not satisfied with Boateng’s apology to German captain and has claimed that the his client is set to suffer a €1 million loss of revenue from sponsors and bonuses after the influential midfielder is ruled out of the World Cup, thanks Boateng’s reckless challenge in the FA Cup final.

Becker is also adamant that Ghanaian had no intention to play the ball during his challenge on Ballack.

“Every spectator has seen what Boateng did. That was clearly a foul with the intention to hurt Ballack. We are considering taking legal action,” said Becker in an interview with Bild.

“We are thinking about taking the case to civil court, but criminal punishment is also an option. You can’t just intentionally break the rules to hurt your opponent. It’s not like a football field is a place where the law doesn’t count, unlike what Boateng thinks.”

It is worth noting here that Boateng has been named as Germany’s enemy number 1 ever since his reckless challenge forced Ballack, the Captain of Germany, to get ruled out of the World Cup.
